Grant of citizenship: SC questions singling out of Assam

The SC questioned the Centre on why it excluded West Bengal from granting citizenship under section 6A of the Citizenship Act, despite the state sharing a larger border with Bangladesh. The Court sought to understand the reason for singling out Assam and leaving West Bengal aside. The bench also inquired about the current situation in West Bengal and asked about government's efforts to safeguard the border. Centre clarified that the examination of the constitutional validity of Section 6A is limited to a specific period of time and does not involve any other amendments to the Citizenship Act.
